Naryan-Mar Agriculture Research Station – division of the N.P. Laverov Federal Center for Integrated Arctic Research of the UB RAS in Naryan-Mar, Nenets Autonomous District (NMARS)
Naryan-Mar Agriculture Research Station (NMARS) is located in the administrative center of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (Arkhangelsk Oblast), a constituent entity of the Federation, which is entirely included into the borders of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation (AZRF).
NMARS is the successor of the Naryan-Mar Reindeer Experimental Station, established on the basis of the reindeer herding station of the Northern Kray (Province) in 1932. Until 1937, the station was in the structure of Main Directorate of the Northern Sea Route, in 1938–1969 it functioned in the system of the Research Institute of Polar Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing, then the Research Institute of Agriculture of the Far North of the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1956, on the basis of the institution, the NMARS was organized, which in 1991 was included in the Arkhangelsk Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture (which currently is the Arkhangelsk Research Institute of Agriculture/ ARIAG – division of the N.P. Laverov Federal Center for Integrated Arctic Research of the UB RAS ), established in the same year.
In 2016 both NMARS and ARIAG, have become an autonomous divisions of the newly created FECIAR UB RAS.
NMARS carries research and development within the framework of the priorities of the Strategy for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2035 in terms of supporting the traditional use of natural resources of the indigenous population, agriculture and the production of organic food to ensure a high quality of life for the population of the Arctic.
MAIN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AREAS
- development of the system of sustainable development of reindeer herding in the Russian Arctic;
- formation of a system of adaptive rational use of genetic resources of reindeer in the AZRF;
- improving the species and varietal composition of forage crops in the AZRF.
